Eight Weeks to Go
Eight weeks to go, and the pieces are starting to fall into place. Insurance is now sorted (shout out to Yellow Jersey for their specialist cycling insurance), and the next step is to get my e-visa sorted. I’ve also decided that it’s probably a good idea to start scaling back my CrossFit sessions at CrossFit Dawn: still training, but easing off the intensity to avoid any last-minute injuries.
I actually started CrossFit back in January, with this cycle
event as the motivation. I wanted to build strength, stamina, and a bit of grit
- and I have to say it’s been transformative. There’s been ripped calluses,
sore muscles, and the occasional “why am I doing this?” moment, but in the
company of some excellent, supportive and genuinely inspiring people. It’s all
been part of the journey and I know the effort will help me get across the
finish line in Kenya.
I’m now 70% of the way towards my £1800 fundraising target,
raising money for Child.org. They’re a fabulous
charity working to improve maternal and child health in Kenya, by running
pregnancy support groups, training health volunteers, and making sure mums and
babies get the care they need.
For example, their ‘Team Mum’ Pregnant Women’s Groups bring
pregnant women from incredibly isolated communities together over six sessions
to teach women how to look after themselves and their babies during pregnancy,
birth, and the newborn period.
For many women, the last time they learned about
reproductive health and pregnancy was at school. In some cases, women who left
school early will have missed this entirely.
Team Mum sessions, run by trained and trusted health
workers, make essential healthcare knowledge accessible and ensure safer
pregnancies and births for women in rural communities.
It’s vital work, and I’m proud to be riding in support of
it. You can help too, by donating at https://www.justgiving.com/page/dave-ross-1.
(Every penny of every donation goes directly to Child.org
and not to my costs or administration fees.)
Every donation, share, and message of encouragement has
helped get me this far, and I’m incredibly grateful. There’s still ground to
cover, but the starting line is starting to come into view.
Eight weeks to go.
